Chapter 08 - The Man at the Airport
Mason was arrested at Logan Airport using a passport under another name.
In his luggage, authorities found cash, encrypted drives, and a one-way ticket to Lisbon. He also carried a signed statement claiming Claire acted alone.
When detectives confronted him with the recorded phone call, he requested a deal.
Mason offered financial records proving that Claire had planned the property scheme before Daniel accepted the Saudi contract.
“She encouraged him to leave,” Mason said.
Daniel heard the confession through the observation room.
Claire had presented the overseas job as a career opportunity. She helped negotiate the eight-month term, assured him she would care for Evelyn, and insisted they did not need to hire a full-time nurse.
Mason produced messages.
Once Daniel is gone, she has no one.
We need the medical declaration before he returns.
If Evelyn signs, Daniel never has to know how.
One message disturbed investigators more than the others.
If she refuses until the deadline, use the full dose. A death delays probate, but it still gets us control.
Claire had sent it four days before Daniel returned.
Her attorneys argued that “full dose” referred to prescribed pain medication and that the message was being misinterpreted.
Toxicology results showed Evelyn had received nearly three times the recommended sedative level that same night.
The charge became attempted murder.
Mason pleaded guilty to conspiracy, fraud, elder abuse, and identity theft in exchange for cooperation.
Claire refused every offer.
“She thinks Daniel will protect her from prison,” Mason told prosecutors. “He always protected the marriage.”
Daniel met Mason during a supervised interview.
“You knew she was hurting my mother.”
Mason looked away. “Claire said Evelyn exaggerated.”
“You saw the videos.”
“Only after.”
“You forged my signature.”
“You never checked the accounts.”
The statement was cruel because it contained truth.
Daniel had trusted systems he should have monitored. He had allowed convenience to replace attention.
But negligence was not conspiracy.
“I will live with what I failed to see,” Daniel said. “You will answer for what you chose to do.”
Mason gave investigators the password to the encrypted drives.
The files contained one final surprise.
Northbridge Development was not merely a buyer.
Claire secretly owned eighteen percent of it through an offshore trust.
She had planned to take Hawthorne House, sell it to her own company below market value, and profit again when the land was developed.
