Chapter 10 - The Chairman in the Basement

Russell Crane was not dead.

Police found him thirty-six hours later inside an unfinished Hartwell studio complex. He had been bound in a basement equipment room with a note pinned to his jacket:

ASK ELENA WHO AUTHORIZED THE TRANSFER.

The transfer referred to sixty million dollars moved from Hartwell pension funds into a Cross Capital bond offering three years earlier. Elena’s signature appeared on the approval.

Again, she had never signed it.

Crane admitted Damien pressured him to accept the documents, but he claimed Elena verbally approved the transaction during a private dinner. The dinner occurred the same night Elena was treated for a concussion after “falling” in the bathroom.

Damien had timed financial crimes around injuries that weakened her memory and credibility.

Crane also confessed he cut the broadcast under threat. Someone sent photographs of his teenage son leaving school.

“Who kidnapped you?” Detective Pike asked.

Crane described a masked man but remembered a distinctive watch engraved with a cross-shaped crest.

Victor recognized it. Cross Capital gave those watches to five senior security officers.

One belonged to Damien’s cousin, Marcus Cross, a former police officer who managed private investigations for Celeste.

Marcus vanished before warrants were served.

Marissa remembered him from the boating night. He had driven her to the lake and injected her with a sedative before placing her on the boat. She awoke days later inside Crosswell.

The conspiracy no longer belonged only to Damien and Celeste. It included doctors, security officers, executives, and a chairman who chose silence until danger reached his own family.

Elena asked the board to remove Crane permanently.

Some directors argued he was also a victim.

“He became a victim after years of helping create victims,” Elena said. “We can protect him without returning his power.”

The motion passed.

Later, Margaret found Elena alone in the studio where Crane had been held.

“You do not need to visit every place he damaged,” she said.

“I need to understand the architecture.”

Margaret knew what she meant. Abuse had not survived through Damien’s anger alone. It survived through rooms designed to isolate, forms designed to discredit, and people paid to look away.

On the basement wall, investigators found a small camera.

Its memory card showed Marcus leaving Crane alive.

A second figure entered minutes later.
