Celeste’s Performance

Chapter 11 - Celeste’s Performance
Celeste released the basement video before police could arrest her.
In a professionally edited statement, she claimed Damien had controlled her for years through threats and financial dependence. She admitted helping conceal Marissa but described herself as a terrified mother trying to prevent her son from becoming more violent.
Public sympathy divided.
Survivor advocates warned that abused people sometimes participate in harm under coercion. Legal analysts noted that Celeste controlled billions, private security, hospitals, and politicians. She was not powerless in the ordinary sense.
Margaret refused simple categories.
“Someone can be harmed and still choose to harm others,” she told Elena. “Understanding a chain does not erase the hands holding it.”
Celeste surrendered with cameras waiting.
During questioning, she offered evidence against Damien in exchange for immunity on the financial charges. She claimed Marcus acted independently when he kidnapped Crane and threatened Victor.
Then investigators found a hidden instruction in the basement video metadata. Celeste had scheduled it to release only if she failed to enter a daily password.
She had planned her victim statement before the kidnapping.
Naomi uncovered another secret: Celeste was not merely protecting Cross Capital. She had been preparing to replace Damien as chief executive after Elena’s commitment. The psychiatric petition transferred Elena’s shares first to Damien, then to a family trust Celeste controlled if he became legally compromised.
The gala assault may have ruined Damien’s role, but it improved hers.
Celeste had allowed the public attack because her son’s arrest activated her backup plan.
When Margaret confronted her in the interview room, Celeste did not deny it.
“I knew he would eventually expose himself,” she said.
“So you placed my daughter within reach.”
“I placed witnesses nearby.”
“You sat and drank wine.”
Celeste’s eyes cooled.
“I survived men you would not have lasted a week beside.”
Margaret stood.
“Perhaps. But I would not call another woman’s bruises the cost of my survival.”
Celeste’s immunity request was denied.
Before agents took her away, she warned that Damien possessed a final file capable of destroying the Ellison family.
“He did not choose Elena only for Hartwell,” she said. “He chose her because of Victor.”
Margaret returned home and asked her husband what Damien could possibly know.
Victor sat in silence for a long time.

Then he opened a safe and removed a sealed report from Ben’s climbing accident.
He had hidden evidence for six years.
