The Choice at the Fire

Chapter 14 - The Choice at the Fire

Elena could have left Damien behind the burning beam.

No one would have blamed her.

The smoke thickened. Three workers waited behind a locked fire door. Damien lay trapped near the river corridor with flames moving toward him.

Elena chose the workers first.

She unlocked the archive and guided them toward police. Then she returned with a fire extinguisher and cleared enough flame for officers to reach Damien.

He stared at her while paramedics lifted the beam.

“Why?” he asked.

“Because you do not decide who I become.”

The sentence followed him into custody.

The metal box survived. Inside were Ben’s climbing radio, the original anchor mechanism, and a letter Damien had written but never sent.

He admitted disconnecting Ben’s line during the argument. He claimed he intended only to frighten him. When Ben slipped, Damien could have attached the emergency rope but chose instead to protect the financial files Ben carried.

Ben died while Damien searched his pack.

The letter was not remorse. It was a rehearsal for explaining the crime if evidence appeared.

Marcus confessed after learning Damien planned to blame every violent act on him. He described the boating setup, Crosswell payments, Crane’s kidnapping, and the threat against Victor.

The prosecution now had a complete chain.

At the hospital, Margaret sat beside Elena as doctors treated smoke exposure and burns on her hand.

“You went back for him,” Margaret said.

“I went back so I would never wonder whether I became like him.”

Margaret touched her daughter’s hair.

“I am proud of you.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“Be proud when I do something ordinary too.”

Margaret understood. For years, the family celebrated Elena only when she endured extraordinary pain gracefully. Survival had become another performance.

“I am proud you dislike hospital pudding,” she said.

“It is aggressively beige.”

They laughed until Elena’s breathing hurt.

Outside, Victor waited alone. Elena agreed to see him but not forgive him immediately.

He apologized without explaining his intentions.

“I chose secrecy,” he said. “You paid for it.”

Elena nodded.

It was not reconciliation.

It was the first honest beam in a structure they might someday rebuild.
