The Son Celeste Built

Chapter 07 - The Son Celeste Built
Celeste Cross requested a private meeting with Margaret.
They met in an empty hotel restaurant under the supervision of attorneys. Celeste wore gray wool and no jewelry, a calculated image of maternal exhaustion.
“My son needs treatment,” she said.
“Your son needs consequences.”
“Consequences can exist without destroying the company.”
Celeste offered to surrender Dr. Baines, repay thirty million dollars, and support a restraining order. In exchange, Margaret and Elena would stop pursuing the hidden-hospital records and corporate transfers.
Margaret understood the offer. Celeste did not care whether Damien went to jail for assault. She cared whether investigators opened the financial architecture surrounding him.
“What did he see you do?” Margaret asked.
Celeste’s expression changed slightly.
Damien had grown up watching his father humiliate and strike Celeste. After her husband died, Celeste rebuilt Cross Capital and publicly described herself as a survivor. Privately, she taught Damien that power mattered more than truth.
“He promised he would never become his father,” Celeste said.
“And when he did?”
“I tried to contain it.”
“You contained the women.”
Celeste looked toward the dark windows.
She admitted arranging Marissa’s commitment but claimed Damien told her Marissa was suicidal. She admitted funding Dr. Baines but denied knowing the diagnoses were fabricated. She insisted she remained seated during the gala attack because sudden intervention might have escalated him.
Margaret leaned forward.
“You remained seated because you had practiced surviving him by making other women absorb the danger.”
Celeste’s hand tightened around her cup.
Before leaving, she gave Margaret a flash drive.
It contained private recordings from Damien’s office. Celeste had installed surveillance after Marissa disappeared. She said the files would prove Damien acted independently.
Naomi examined them and found selective gaps. The recordings implicated Damien in fraud, threats, and forged signatures—but none mentioned Celeste’s accounts.
It was not a confession.
It was a mother sacrificing her son to save the machine that created him.
The final file contained Damien discussing Elena’s brother Ben.
“We were lucky the climbing report stayed clean,” he told Dr. Baines.
Margaret replayed the sentence three times.

Ben’s death had brought Damien closer to Elena.
Until that moment, no one had considered it anything but an accident.
