The Mountain Report

Chapter 08 - The Mountain Report

Ben Ellison died on Mount Mercer during a charity climb sponsored by Cross Capital.

The official report blamed a defective anchor installed by an unknown climber. Damien had been on the same route but turned back because of weather. He later told Elena he heard Ben fall over the radio.

Margaret had never listened to the raw recordings.

The sheriff’s archive contained a damaged memory card recovered from Ben’s helmet camera. Investigators had extracted only six minutes before declaring the rest corrupted.

Naomi’s technician recovered another forty-two seconds.

The video showed Ben and Damien arguing beside the anchor point.

Ben accused Damien of falsifying hospital investments and threatened to tell Elena before the wedding. Damien stepped toward the camera. The image spun. Ben shouted, “Do not touch that line.”

The recording ended.

It did not show the fall.

It changed everything.

Victor watched the footage once, then left the room without speaking. Margaret found him in the hallway, one hand against the wall.

“We welcomed him into our house,” he said.

“We did not know.”

“Ben knew.”

Their grief had no clean target. Damien may have caused the fall, or Ben may have died during a struggle. Either possibility turned years of family memories into evidence.

Detective Pike reopened the case.

Damien’s attorneys called the video ambiguous. Celeste claimed she had never heard of the argument. Dr. Baines denied remembering the office conversation despite his voice on the recording.

Elena blamed herself.

“Ben tried to warn me.”

Margaret refused to let the sentence stand.

“Damien made the choice. Ben challenged him. You loved the person Damien pretended to be.”

That evening, Elena received a message from an unknown number.

A photograph showed Victor entering his car outside Hartwell headquarters.

Beneath it were six words:

ONE FATHER HAS ALREADY LOST A SON.

Security moved Victor and Margaret to a safe residence. Elena refused to hide.

She scheduled a live shareholder meeting and announced that Hartwell Media would publish every verified document connected to Damien, Crosswell, and the missing hospital funds.

“If he survives by controlling the story,” she told Naomi, “we remove the walls around it.”

May you like

Naomi nodded.

“Then prepare for him to set the building on fire.”
