Chapter 18 - The Letter From Prison

Two years after the trial, Damien sent Elena a letter.

Prison staff had inspected it. There were no threats, hidden codes, or legal demands. He wrote that therapy helped him understand how fear shaped his behavior. He apologized for the gala, Marissa, and Ben.

He asked Elena to visit once.

Margaret wanted the letter destroyed.

Elena kept it for three days before deciding.

She did not visit.

Instead, she sent a single response through Naomi:

Your understanding is your responsibility. My presence is not part of your rehabilitation.

Damien never wrote again.

Celeste did.

Her letter contained no apology. She described conditions inside prison, complained about poor medical care, and asked Elena to protect Crosswell’s former employees from prosecution.

Elena forwarded it to investigators without replying.

Marissa found the decision satisfying.

“Do you ever feel sorry for them?” she asked.

“Sometimes,” Elena said. “Feeling sorry is not the same as reopening the door.”

The two women had become friends in an unusual, cautious way. They did not call themselves sisters in survival or use language that tied their identities permanently to Damien. They talked about work, food, bad television, and the strange fact that both disliked lavender because Celeste used it in every room.

Margaret learned to ask before helping.

That change seemed small, but Elena noticed it. Her mother no longer arranged security, statements, or interviews without permission. When she worried, she said so without turning worry into an order.

On the anniversary of Ben’s death, the family returned to the mountain.

Victor placed the original private report inside a memorial box beside the trail, along with a public statement about his concealment. Monica, serving her sentence under supervised release, sent a letter that Margaret read privately.

Elena stood at the anchor point where Ben fell.

She did not forgive everyone.

She did not need to.

Forgiveness was not a tax survivors paid to prove healing.

Before leaving, Margaret noticed a fresh metal tag attached beneath the memorial plaque.
