Chapter 13 - The Printing Plant

The old Hartwell printing plant stood beside the freight tracks like a dead cathedral.

Police established a perimeter, but Damien had entered through tunnels connecting the press floor to the river warehouse. Marcus was seen carrying fuel containers and boxes of files.

Damien called Elena from inside.

He demanded the original Hartwell trust certificate and a car. In return, he promised to release three night workers trapped in the archive room.

Detective Pike refused to let Elena approach.

She knew Damien would not accept anyone else.

Margaret wanted to stop her, but the promise she made after Victor’s confession held. No more deciding what truth or risk Elena could survive.

“You choose,” Margaret said. “I stay beside the choice.”

Elena entered wearing a police wire and carrying a duplicate certificate.

The press floor smelled of oil and wet paper. Damien waited beneath the rusted machinery in the same blue suit he had worn at the gala, now torn at one shoulder.

“You brought your mother’s courage,” he said.

“No. Mine.”

He laughed softly.

Damien insisted Ben attacked first after accusing him of fraud. During the struggle, Damien pulled the wrong line. He claimed the death was an accident and Victor’s silence proved everyone understood that powerful families protected themselves.

“You built your life on what other people were ashamed to admit,” Elena said.

Marcus appeared behind her with a gun.

The wire transmitted everything.

Damien ordered Elena to sign the certificate. She showed him the duplicate and explained that the trust no longer depended on a physical document. The board had converted control into an independent voting structure that morning.

He had lost before she entered.

Marcus panicked and ignited the fuel.

Flames climbed the paper rolls. Sprinklers failed because the water line had been cut.

Damien ran toward the archive. Elena moved toward the trapped workers.

For one second, he stared at her as if unable to understand why she would choose strangers over the documents.

Police breached the side doors.

Marcus fired once into the ceiling and was tackled by Detective Pike. Margaret, watching from the command vehicle, heard Elena coughing over the wire.

Damien reached the river exit.

Then he turned back.

Not to save Elena.

To retrieve a metal box marked BEN ELLISON.

A burning beam collapsed across his path.
