Chapter 10 - Evelyn’s Offer

Claire’s letter was dated three weeks before her death.

It praised Evelyn’s ambition, criticized Richard Mercer’s recklessness, and proposed merging Holloway Architecture with Mercer Development under equal control. The final paragraph named Evelyn as temporary trustee if Claire became incapacitated.

Evelyn presented it as proof that everything she had done was authorized.

Grace read the letter twice.

The signature looked genuine.

Simon confirmed Claire’s handwriting. Lena warned that the temporary-trustee clause could weaken Grace’s claim to the house and patents.

Evelyn offered a settlement.

Julian would resign and leave the country. The foundation would repay a portion of stolen funds. Grace would receive Mercer House, three billion dollars, and public recognition as Claire’s heir.

In return, she would surrender the hidden recordings and stop pursuing Claire and Thomas’s deaths.

“You are offering me my own property,” Grace said.

“I am offering you a life.”

“You tried to take mine.”

“I tried to prevent chaos.”

Evelyn’s voice never rose. That calm had ruled rooms for half a century.

She admitted hiding failed construction reports and using the secret cameras to control politicians and regulators. She denied ordering either death. Richard, she claimed, acted without her knowledge.

“Men like Richard and Julian confuse cruelty with decisiveness,” she said. “Women like us survive by cleaning their damage.”

Grace thought of Emma’s mother, of the 143 names, of staff members filmed in their rooms.

“No,” she said. “Women like you survive by making other people pay.”

Evelyn’s offer expired at midnight.

Before leaving, she whispered that Claire’s letter contained a code Thomas had never solved.

Grace examined the page under the diamond reader. Tiny variations in ink revealed another message layered beneath the visible text.

TRUST EVELYN UNTIL THE BLUE ROOM OPENS.

The message appeared to be Claire’s.

Grace hated it.

The blue room was located behind Evelyn’s private bedroom. Inside, agents found preserved architectural models, medical files, and a wall covered with photographs of Claire.

Evelyn had not merely exploited her.

She had loved her.

In a locked drawer lay correspondence proving Claire and Evelyn had planned to leave their husbands and build a company together. Richard discovered the plan.

The final letter ended with one sentence:

If anything happens to me, Evelyn knows where Richard keeps the original formula.

The “formula” was not a design.
