Chapter 18 - What She Chose to Keep
Grace finalized her divorce one year after the night in the ballroom.
Julian signed from prison.
He attempted to claim half the Holloway Trust under marital-property law. The judge denied the request with language so sharp that Lena printed the ruling and framed it in her bathroom.
Grace kept three things from the marriage.
A chipped ceramic mug from the kitchen.
A photograph of herself and Emma laughing during renovation.
The repaired diamond necklace.
She no longer wore it every day.
The central stone rested inside a secure museum display at Mercer House, now renamed Holloway House for Public Integrity. A replica carried the emergency transmitter so visitors could see how Thomas built it. Beside the display, Grace placed a simple sentence:
TECHNOLOGY RECORDED THE TRUTH. PEOPLE CHOSE WHETHER TO ACT.
Mercer Development adopted a new name: Common Ground Works.
The employee-community trust controlled the largest voting block. Grace served a limited three-year term as chair, after which she would return to forensic investigations and teaching.
Noah resigned from federal service before disciplinary proceedings could decide his future. He opened a nonprofit investigative unit for victims whose cases involved corporate influence.
“You enjoy being difficult without a salary structure,” Grace told him.
“It is my calling.”
Emma finished her safety-certification program and became the youngest member of Common Ground’s oversight council. Simon surrendered his medical license and testified against other professionals who sold diagnoses to powerful families. He did not ask Grace for forgiveness.
Claire’s modular housing designs were released under a public license for disaster relief.
The first completed neighborhood stood where one of Mercer’s ghost projects had been claimed on paper. Real houses replaced fraudulent photographs.
At the opening, a little boy asked Grace whether she was the lady with the magic necklace.
“No,” she said. “It was mostly batteries.”
His disappointment was profound.
She showed him the emergency button anyway.
That night, Grace returned to Holloway House. The ballroom was empty except for moonlight and the dark stone eye in the floor.
She no longer feared the room.
But before leaving, she noticed a faint light inside the necklace display.
