The House That Belonged to Grace

Chapter 16 - The House That Belonged to Grace

The court restored Mercer House to Holloway Architecture and Trust.

Grace received the keys during a quiet hearing. No cameras were permitted, which disappointed three networks and delighted everyone who had ever watched a reporter block a courthouse staircase.

The mansion was badly damaged by fire, but its stone structure remained sound.

Evelyn expected Grace to sell it.

Julian expected her to live there as proof she wanted his life.

Grace did neither.

She reopened the sealed staff quarters and invited former employees to document what had happened in the house. Hidden cameras were removed. Every private recording was cataloged under court supervision, with victims deciding whether files were destroyed or preserved as evidence.

The ballroom became a public archive about surveillance, coercive control, and corporate fraud.

The blue room became a memorial to Claire and Thomas Holloway—not as saints, but as talented, imperfect people whose work had been stolen.

Emma suggested turning the north wing into temporary housing for families displaced from unsafe Mercer shelters.

Noah suggested better locks.

Lena suggested coffee.

All proposals passed.

During renovation, workers uncovered a small metal box inside the wall where the necklace signal failed. It contained Claire’s original partnership contract with Evelyn and a reel of audio tape.

The contract divided ownership equally, but the final page carried an amendment.

If either partner used the company to harm the public, her shares would transfer not to family, but to the employees and communities affected.

Claire had anticipated betrayal.

Grace could have challenged the amendment and kept Evelyn’s half of the fortune. Instead, she activated it.

Billions in shares moved into an independent public-benefit trust.

Some investors called the decision irrational.

Grace called it overdue.

Noah found her standing in the restored foyer beneath a temporary work light.

“This place looks smaller,” she said.

“You are standing up this time.”

She looked at the marble circle where Julian had left her.

Workers had replaced the bloodstained section with a darker stone pattern shaped like an open eye.

Grace had not requested it.

Emma had.

“No more blind spots,” she explained.
