The Night the Mansion Burned

Chapter 12 - The Night the Mansion Burned
Mercer House was evacuated before sunset.
Fire crews searched the visible control rooms but found nothing capable of triggering the threatened destruction. Evelyn refused to provide the code. She claimed Julian invented the story to improve his plea deal.
Grace did not believe him.
She believed the house.
The old mansion had vents where walls should have been, staircases that ended behind portraits, and enough electrical renovations to make a fire inspector consider a new profession.
Emma remembered Cole carrying small metal cases into the north wing. Simon identified them as thermal charges used to destroy laboratory records.
At 11:46 p.m., smoke appeared behind the ballroom walls.
Grace, Noah, Lena, Emma, and firefighters entered through the service corridor. Flames traveled inside the paneling, invisible until sections of carved wood burst open.
In the blue room, Grace found the architectural models burning. She tried to reach Claire’s letters, but a ceiling beam dropped between her and the cabinet.
Noah pulled her back.
“You cannot save paper by becoming ash.”
“The letters prove who she was.”
“You prove who she was.”
They moved toward the basement archive.
Cole appeared near the ballroom, injured and coughing. He had escaped custody during a hospital transfer with help from a Mercer-paid deputy. He was not there to destroy evidence.
He was there to recover one file.
Thomas Holloway’s original accident report.
Cole admitted driving Thomas’s car after Julian struck him unconscious. Richard ordered Cole to place Thomas inside and send the car down an embankment. Cole said Thomas woke before the crash and fought back.
“Was he alive when you left?” Grace asked.
Cole looked at the flames.
“Yes.”
The official report said Thomas died on impact. If Cole told the truth, someone reached the crash site later.
A burst pipe flooded the lower hallway. Firefighters ordered everyone out.
Cole handed Grace a waterproof evidence pouch.
Inside was a photograph taken at the crash scene before police arrived.
Evelyn stood beside Thomas’s car.
Then the ballroom chandelier crashed.
The sound shook the mansion. Grace saw fire reflecting in the marble where she had lain days earlier. Noah guided her toward the doors while firefighters carried Cole out.
The secret archives burned.
The cloud copies did not.
Julian had once believed cutting cameras could erase truth.
Evelyn believed fire could.

always make a second copy.
