Noah wanted Julian arrested immediately.
The federal prosecutor wanted a cleaner case.
The secret video established assault and conspiracy, but not who caused Thomas’s death. The statute issues were complicated. The blackmail system itself could create evidentiary problems because recordings had been made illegally.
Noah leaked the airfield location to a trusted agent and led the arrest team without authorization.
They reached the runway as Julian’s jet began moving.
Noah drove a government SUV across the taxi lane and stopped in front of the aircraft. The pilot braked hard. Julian emerged furious, carrying no luggage and claiming a business emergency.
Agents found eight boxes of financial records and twelve million dollars in bearer bonds.
They also found Cole hiding inside a service compartment.
Noah’s decision prevented Julian’s escape.
It also ended his career on the case.
His supervisor placed him on administrative leave for acting outside orders. Julian’s attorneys accused him of personal vengeance. Every future hearing would include questions about Noah’s conduct.
Grace met him outside headquarters.
“You saved the evidence,” she said.
“I may have damaged the prosecution.”
“You always did prefer dramatic entrances.”
“You married a billionaire criminal.”
“We all have hobbies.”
The humor faded quickly.
Noah confessed that their father had contacted him the night he died. Thomas asked him to protect Grace and stay away from Mercer House. Noah, then a young police officer, obeyed. He had spent twelve years wondering whether going there would have saved him.
Grace took his hand.
“Guilt is not a time machine.”
Neither of them believed the sentence, but both needed to hear it.
With Noah removed, Grace became the prosecution’s most important witness and the Mercer board’s greatest threat. Julian’s allies called an emergency meeting to remove her permanently from the foundation.
Grace entered wearing a dark suit and the repaired diamond necklace.
She presented the forged deed, the patent trust, and the missing-houses audit. Then she announced that Holloway Architecture and Trust was revoking Mercer’s license to use every Claire Holloway design.
Half the company’s major projects depended on those patents.
A director whispered, “That could destroy us.”
Grace looked around the room.
“No. Fraud could destroy you. I am merely declining to continue renting it my mother’s name.”
The vote to remove her failed.
