Julian filed for emergency guardianship the next morning.

His petition argued that Grace’s hospital departure, obsession with hidden rooms, and “paranoid theories” proved she was a danger to herself. He included an affidavit from Dr. Simon Vale, the psychiatrist on Mercer’s payroll, and requested control of her medical, financial, and legal decisions.

The hearing was scheduled within hours.

Lena called it an ambush.

Grace called it Tuesday.

In court, Julian sat beside his attorneys with a bruise carefully visible near his jaw. He claimed Grace struck him first in the mansion. Evelyn described years of instability, dramatic suspicions, and delusions about her parents.

Then Lena played the first six minutes of the necklace recording.

The judge heard Julian order the doors locked and Evelyn discuss taking Grace’s foundation shares. She heard Cole confirm that no camera could witness what followed.

Dr. Vale’s face changed when Lena produced his consulting payments.

The guardianship petition was denied.

The judge also ordered Julian to surrender his passport, stay away from Grace, and preserve all Mercer records. Julian smiled politely while the order was read. Grace knew that smile. It meant he had already moved what mattered.

Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted questions.

“Mrs. Mercer, are you mentally ill?”

Grace stopped.

“I am injured, angry, and occasionally bad at choosing husbands. None of those conditions transfer my civil rights.”

The clip spread across the country before lunch.

Support was not universal. Some commentators accused her of using humor to avoid serious questions. Others asked why she had stayed in the marriage if Julian was dangerous.

Grace answered that question privately with Noah.

“I stayed to find what Dad found.”

“You could have told me.”

“You would have pulled me out.”

“Yes.”

“That is why I did not tell you.”

Noah turned away, furious because she was right.

Emma then remembered something from the night she was taken. Cole had received a call from Evelyn, but he addressed the caller as “Claire.”

Claire Holloway had been dead for thirty years.

Grace reviewed the old basement communications log. The message ordering her to the conservatory had originated from an internal account named C.HOLLOWAY.

Someone was using her mother’s credentials.

At sunset, a package arrived at Lena’s office.

Inside was the missing Holloway Star, mounted in a blue velvet box.

A note lay beneath it.
