Chapter 11 - The Dead Man’s Password
Richard Mercer had died eight years after Claire.
His death certificate listed a stroke. His personal archive was never opened because the password died with him.
Grace believed Thomas had hidden the password inside the necklace.
The encrypted burst from the night of the assault contained thirty-two characters, but only sixteen were required for the server they had already opened. The remaining sequence pointed to a vault maintained by Mercer Bank in Switzerland.
Lena obtained a court order.
The vault held chemical purchase records, private medical payments, and Richard’s handwritten journal. He described discovering Claire and Evelyn’s relationship and deciding that neither woman could be allowed to control the merged company.
He paid a laboratory technician to contaminate Claire’s heart medication with an experimental solvent. When Thomas later uncovered the scheme, Richard ordered Julian and Cole to recover the evidence.
Julian was twenty-seven.
Cole was a young security officer.
Evelyn knew about Claire’s poisoning after it happened. She concealed it to protect the company and because Richard threatened to expose private letters that would have destroyed Claire’s reputation in the world they inhabited.
The journal also revealed Richard’s own death was not a stroke.
Evelyn had replaced his medication.
When Grace confronted her, Evelyn did not deny it.
“He killed Claire,” she said.
“So you killed him.”
“I corrected an imbalance.”
Grace felt no satisfaction.
Evelyn had spent decades telling herself revenge was justice and secrecy was protection. Each lie required another person to disappear.
The district attorney charged Evelyn with Richard’s murder and obstruction in Claire’s death. Federal prosecutors charged Julian and Cole with financial crimes, kidnapping Emma, evidence destruction, and conspiracy related to Thomas.
Julian requested a meeting with Grace.
From the detention center, he appeared thinner but still polished.
He claimed Evelyn planned everything, including the locked-room assault. He said he had only wanted Grace to sign because Evelyn threatened to expose his father’s crimes and destroy thousands of employees.
“You chose to shove me,” Grace said.
“I was frightened.”
“So was I.”
“That is different.”
Grace almost laughed.
There it was—the family creed in three words.
Julian then revealed one last danger. Evelyn had placed timed deletion devices in Mercer House’s hidden control rooms. If she failed to enter a code within seventy-two hours, the systems would ignite and erase the archive.
