The Room Beneath the Ballroom

Chapter 08 - The Room Beneath the Ballroom
Simon Holloway had spent most of his life inside the Mercer system.
Claire’s father had another child after abandoning the family. Simon grew up in state institutions and learned of Claire only as an adult. She contacted him during medical school and quietly paid his tuition.
After Claire died, Evelyn offered Simon a bargain. He would serve the Mercers, sign convenient psychiatric opinions, and retain access to records proving how Claire’s work was stolen.
“Why help them?” Grace asked.
“Because I believed survival was the same as patience.”
It was an answer Grace had heard from too many cowards, including herself.
Simon admitted signing the guardianship affidavit. He also admitted returning the diamond after Cole gave it to him for analysis. The message about Claire building the cage was his warning: Claire had created the original trust structure that tied control of the patents to Mercer House.
If the house remained under Mercer ownership, Evelyn controlled access to the intellectual property.
But the deed in the basement proved the transfer was forged.
Grace was the legal heir to Mercer House.
Evelyn listened without interruption.
When Simon finished, she struck the floor once with her cane.
“You are all sentimental about paper. Power belongs to whoever can enforce it.”
Agents moved forward.
The conservatory lights went out.
Steel shutters dropped over the glass doors. A recorded alarm announced a chemical leak. Sprinklers released dense white vapor, forcing everyone to cover their faces.
Evelyn disappeared through a hidden passage.
The passage led beneath the ballroom, where Grace had fallen. There, agents found a second control room filled with live feeds from hidden cameras.
Julian had not truly disabled surveillance.
He had disabled only the cameras Grace knew existed.
The secret system recorded bedrooms, staff quarters, board meetings, and guest suites. Evelyn had collected decades of blackmail.
One screen showed Julian at a private airfield transferring boxes onto a jet.
Another showed Cole driving Emma’s stolen car toward the river.
A third displayed an old recording dated the night Thomas Holloway died. Evelyn stood in the ballroom with Richard Mercer and a younger Julian.
Thomas entered carrying the diamond necklace.
The video had no sound.
Julian struck him.
Richard took the necklace.
Evelyn watched.
The recording ended before Thomas left the house.
Grace understood why her father’s car had been found miles away.

He had not driven from Mercer House.
Someone else had.
