Grant’s Bargain

Chapter 10 - Grant’s Bargain

Grant requested to meet Elena without Vivienne’s lawyers.

She allowed it through a glass conference room with prosecutors present.

He looked exhausted.

Camille had stopped answering his calls. Vivienne publicly blamed him for violence and denied knowledge of Rose’s confinement.

The man who sacrificed his marriage for proximity to power had discovered proximity was not protection.

“I can prove she ordered the archive destruction,” he said.

“Tell the prosecutor.”

“I need a cooperation agreement.”

“That is between you and them.”

“They want the account keys.”

“Give them.”

Grant looked at her.

“I need to know whether you’ll oppose leniency.”

Elena understood what he wanted.

Not forgiveness.

A calculation from the person whose opinion could influence public pressure.

“What did you think would happen after I signed the divorce papers?”

Grant stared at the table.

“I would become president.”

“And me?”

“You would receive a settlement.”

“From assets you believed were mine?”

“I didn’t know the scale.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

He breathed slowly.

“I thought you would leave. You always found a way to be fine.”

The sentence revealed how thoroughly he converted her resilience into permission.

Grant handed prosecutors an encrypted drive.

It contained messages between Vivienne, Camille, and Grant. They discussed Rose’s medication, the divorce clause, and the warehouse cleanup.

One message from Vivienne read:

Humiliation will push Elena to sign faster than negotiation. She has always preferred disappearing to public conflict.

Grant had replied:

Leave the ballroom to me.

Elena read it twice.

The slap had not been a sudden loss of control.

He planned to humiliate her.

Perhaps not the exact strike.

The coercion was deliberate.

Grant also provided recordings of Vivienne ordering files destroyed after the asset freeze. In exchange, prosecutors considered reducing his fraud charges but not the assault or confinement offenses.

Camille accepted a separate deal and admitted monitoring Rose.

After the meeting, Grant asked Elena one final question.

“Was any part of our life real?”

She looked at the man she married in a small city hall, who once carried her shoes through flooded streets and later ordered her to kneel.

“Yes.”

Relief crossed his face.

Elena continued.

May you like

“That is why what you did is betrayal rather than misunderstanding.”

She left him behind the glass.
