Elena’s first official act was not to enter Ashcroft Tower.
She met the estate staff in a rented union hall.
Cooks, cleaners, drivers, gardeners, maintenance workers, and security officers filled folding chairs. Some had served Vivienne for decades. Others had been hired for the gala.
Many looked frightened.
Elena stood before them without makeup covering the bruise.
“I am not here to ask who watched me get hit.”
The room shifted.
“I am here to ask what happened in that house because powerful people assumed watching was all you were allowed to do.”
The head housekeeper, Lorraine Bell, spoke first.
Vivienne withheld overtime, delayed pension enrollment, and deducted broken objects from wages even when guests caused the damage.
A gardener described chemical exposure hidden from insurers.
A driver said Grant used company cars for private meetings with Vivienne’s niece, Camille Ashcroft.
Elena did not react visibly.
She had suspected an affair.
Evidence made suspicion heavier, not more surprising.
A young server named Nina Cole had recorded the slap from behind a floral display. Her video showed Grant grabbing Elena’s arm and trying to force her down before striking her.
Grant’s attorneys were already claiming she provoked him and slipped during an argument.
Nina had not released the video because the estate manager threatened to blacklist every catering worker.
Elena asked whether she wanted to submit it to police.
Nina nodded.
Lorraine then revealed something larger.
For two years, Grant and Vivienne moved old company archives from Ashcroft Hall into a private warehouse. Boxes carried labels related to worker settlements, mine injuries, and the coastal bridge crash that killed Rose.
“Why would Grant know about the crash?” Elena asked.
“He asked for the files after your wedding anniversary last year.”
Grant had learned more about Elena’s family than he admitted.
Perhaps not the ownership.
Enough to know Rose’s death contained value.
Samuel remembered the warehouse address.
It belonged to Camille Ashcroft.
At the same time, Grant held a press conference outside his attorney’s office.
He apologized for “a painful marital argument” and described Elena as emotionally distressed after learning he intended divorce.
He said the slap was indefensible.
Then he suggested her claim to the Ashcroft fortune emerged only after he rejected her.
The strategy was careful.
Admit the act cameras captured.
Discredit everything around it.
Elena watched the broadcast with the workers.
Grant said, “My wife never discussed any ownership interest during eleven years of marriage.”
Elena turned off the screen.
Lorraine asked whether she would answer publicly.
“Yes.”
“What will you say?”
Elena looked at the people whose wages had been treated as household convenience.
“That hiding wealth may complicate a marriage.”
