Chapter 15 - Camille’s Version of Love
Camille Ashcroft received probation and community service after cooperating.
She had participated in Rose’s confinement but did not control medication or physical force. The court considered her subordinate position under Vivienne.
Elena struggled with the leniency.
Camille had known Elena was Grant’s wife.
She accepted his gifts, traveled with him, and helped prepare the coercive divorce.
During a restorative hearing, Camille spoke without attorneys.
“Vivienne raised me after my parents died. She taught me that love was being selected for usefulness.”
Elena listened.
Camille continued.
“When Grant chose me, I thought it meant I had become more valuable than you.”
“That is not love,” Elena said.
“I know.”
“Do you?”
Camille looked toward the workers observing the hearing.
“I am beginning to understand that competing for the favor of powerful people made me participate in whatever proved the competition mattered.”
She apologized to Rose and Elena.
Rose accepted the statement but not a relationship.
Elena did the same.
Camille used part of her remaining inheritance to repay trust funds, then trained in financial compliance. Critics called the new career calculated rehabilitation.
Perhaps it was partly.
People rarely changed from pure motives.
The question became whether their future actions reduced harm or simply improved reputation.
Camille later uncovered fraud at another family-controlled company and reported it despite losing her position.
Elena heard through the trustees.
She sent no congratulatory message.
Doing the right thing did not require applause from the person previously harmed.
Grant learned about Camille’s testimony from prison.
He wrote Elena that Camille had manipulated him too.
Elena returned the letter unopened.
