Midnight Without Money

Chapter 03 - Midnight Without Money
At Ashcroft Hall, the announcement stage remained ready.
A giant screen displayed Grant Mercer’s name above the words PRESIDENT-ELECT.
Vivienne’s chief financial officer approached her during the orchestra’s final song and whispered that the Veridian transfer had failed.
Vivienne assumed technical error.
Then her black card was declined when she ordered a private bottle from the estate cellar.
Security informed her that only the beneficial owner could authorize high-value service after activation of a trust safeguard.
She dismissed the guard.
The replacement guard arrived five minutes later and carried new instructions from Maya Collins.
No guest was to leave with company documents.
No executive was to access the private offices.
All digital records were under preservation hold.
Vivienne called Maya.
“What have you done?”
“Implemented the founder’s clause.”
“On whose authority?”
“The beneficiary’s.”
Vivienne looked at the photograph in her hand.
Rose Ashcroft had disappeared from family life after marrying Daniel Hart, a schoolteacher Vivienne considered socially unsuitable. Their daughter Elena was believed to have died with them in a coastal car accident twenty-three years earlier.
Vivienne had attended the closed funeral.
No bodies were shown.
Arthur refused to discuss it before his death.
Now the woman Grant slapped carried Rose’s face.
Grant found Vivienne in the study.
“The guests are asking why the announcement is delayed.”
She held up Elena’s childhood photograph.
“Who is your wife?”
He almost laughed.
“She is an archivist who decided marriage made her important.”
“Her mother’s name?”
“Rose Hart.”
Vivienne’s fingers closed around the photograph.
Grant finally noticed her fear.
“What is it?”
Before she answered, every screen in the ballroom went black.
A legal notice appeared.
ASSET PRESERVATION ORDER
HART-ASHCROFT LEGACY TRUST
EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY
Guests began recording.
Grant called Elena.
She declined.
He sent a message.
Whatever stunt you pulled, end it now.
No response.
Vivienne ordered him to retrieve the divorce agreement. Grant had asked Elena to sign that morning. The document gave him their apartment, joint savings, and any undisclosed marital assets in exchange for a quiet separation.
He had believed “undisclosed assets” meant perhaps a small inheritance from Rose.
Now he read the clause again.
Vivienne’s lawyer, Celeste Rowe, took the pages from him.
“If she is the beneficiary, this agreement looks like an attempt to obtain trust property through concealment.”
“She never told me.”
“That does not help you.”
Grant’s phone rang.
Maya Collins spoke without greeting.
“Mr. Mercer, your authority as chief operations officer is suspended pending investigation.”
“You cannot suspend me.”
“The owner can.”
“Put the owner on the phone.”
Maya’s voice remained calm.
“You ordered her out of the house twenty-eight minutes ago.”
The line ended.
Grant looked through the study doors toward the guests who had witnessed him strike his wife.

For the first time, he understood they had not watched the destruction of an inconvenient woman.
They had watched a man publicly assault the person who owned the floor beneath his shoes.
