Chapter 16 - Rose’s Music Room
Ashcroft Hall’s eastern gallery became a music school.
Rose had dreamed of building one before the crash. Arthur approved the architectural plans but converted the room into a display hall after she disappeared.
Workers removed glass cases and installed acoustic panels.
Children from the temporary housing program attended free lessons.
Rose taught piano twice a week, though nerve damage made her left hand unreliable. She demonstrated with the right and laughed when students played louder than she intended.
Elena sat near the back during the first recital.
The chandelier above the ballroom was visible through open doors.
A nine-year-old girl forgot her music and began crying.
Rose moved beside her.
“Start wherever you still remember.”
The child began from the middle.
The audience followed.
Afterward, Elena found Rose alone near Arthur’s portrait.
“Do you forgive him?” Elena asked.
“For hiding me?”
“For hiding me from you.”
Rose considered.
“He was afraid Vivienne would find you.”
“She did anyway.”
“Yes.”
“He protected me.”
“He also decided we could survive separation without asking us.”
Elena touched the portrait frame.
“Everyone in this family called control protection.”
Rose nodded.
“Sometimes protection is necessary. The danger is believing necessity makes the cost disappear.”
They placed Arthur’s recorded confession in the archive beside the trust documents.
No heroic founder narrative.
No complete condemnation.
Arthur created the safeguard that returned the fortune.
He also took a child from her living mother.
History became more accurate when it stopped requiring people to fit one moral role.
The music room opened fully the following spring.
Its plaque carried no Ashcroft name.
