Grant moved Rose into a private garden apartment owned by Camille.
He told staff she was an elderly aunt with memory problems.
Rose was sixty-two, physically weak, and heavily medicated. She recognized Elena only after hearing the childhood song Arthur used to hum.
Elena sat beside her for an hour before asking questions.
Rose touched the bruise on her daughter’s cheek.
“Vivienne?”
“Grant.”
Rose closed her eyes.
“I chose the wrong danger to warn you about.”
She explained the crash.
Daniel Hart died when the brakes failed. Rose survived with injuries. Vivienne’s doctor told her Elena had also died. Sedatives and grief made time unreliable.
Weeks later, Arthur found her.
He wanted to bring Elena immediately.
Rose refused until she could prove Vivienne ordered the sabotage. Arthur moved her to Switzerland for safety.
Then Arthur died unexpectedly.
Vivienne’s lawyers took control of the medical trust funding Rose’s treatment. They increased medication and described her claims as paranoia.
Rose wrote letters to Elena.
None arrived.
Two years earlier, Grant discovered the payments. He visited Rose and promised to reunite mother and daughter after verifying the story.
Instead, he recorded her, collected information about the trust, and asked where Arthur kept original ownership documents.
“He told me you were ill,” Rose said. “He said knowing I lived would break you.”
“Why did you leave Switzerland with him?”
“He showed me a photograph of you asleep in a hospital.”
Elena had undergone minor surgery that year.
Grant told Rose complications placed Elena near death and only he could arrange contact.
He used concern as access.
When Grant learned Rose did not know how to transfer the trust, he moved her near Boston and reduced visits.
Camille supervised medication.
Rose escaped the apartment after hearing news of the gala slap on television. A neighbor recognized her confusion and called emergency services.
Grant’s plan had been to obtain Rose’s signature on a declaration disputing Elena’s status as beneficiary. If Rose appeared legally alive and incompetent, control could return temporarily to Vivienne as family steward.
The divorce agreement would then give Grant a claim to Elena’s personal assets while he helped Vivienne regain company authority.
The marriage, the affair, and Rose’s confinement had converged into one strategy.
Elena asked whether Grant ever cared for her mother.
Rose looked toward the window.
“He brought flowers.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
“No.”
Rose understood the difference.
The discovery produced criminal charges for unlawful confinement, fraud, and elder exploitation.
Grant’s attorney requested a deal.
He offered evidence against Vivienne in exchange for reduced charges.
