Evelyn’s First Letter

Chapter 18 - Evelyn’s First Letter

Evelyn wrote Gabriel from prison.

The first letter blamed Vale, Arthur and Claire.

Gabriel returned it unopened.

The second described childhood memories and asked to see a photograph of Anna.

He did not respond.

The third contained one sentence he had never heard from her.

I taught you to doubt everyone except me.

Gabriel read the letter twice.

He showed it to Claire but did not ask what to do.

Months later, he wrote back.

He acknowledged the sentence and stated clear conditions: no contact with Anna, no discussion of appeals, no requests for money or influence, and no attacks on Claire.

Evelyn replied within the limits.

Their correspondence continued irregularly.

Claire chose no contact.

Emma chose none as well.

Gabriel did not pressure either woman.
