What Evelyn Put in the IV

Chapter 03 - What Evelyn Put in the IV

The emergency obstetric team entered within ninety seconds.

Dr. Lena Ortiz disconnected Claire’s IV and preserved the tubing inside a sealed evidence bag. A second physician monitored the baby while Gabriel held Claire’s hand.

The contractions slowed.

The fetal heartbeat remained strong.

Claire and the child survived.

Preliminary toxicology found a powerful sedative mixed with a medication capable of lowering blood pressure and triggering confusion. The dose in Claire’s bloodstream could explain her recent memory lapses.

It could also have caused a fall severe enough to injure the baby.

The drug had not been ordered by her obstetrician.

Hospital logs showed Dr. Adrian Vale, Sterling Memorial’s chief medical officer, entered the prescription under another patient’s name. Evelyn’s access code opened the medication cabinet.

Gabriel confronted his mother inside a secured consultation room.

Evelyn denied adding the drug.

He showed her the video.

She changed the explanation.

Claire had been hysterical. Evelyn claimed she administered medication to prevent premature labor after Dr. Vale told her it was safe.

“Why did you hide it?” Gabriel asked.

“Because your wife turns every medical decision into a legal accusation.”

“You pushed her.”

“She grabbed me first.”

The recording showed no such thing.

Gabriel watched the woman who raised him search for a version of the scene that still placed her in control.

Then investigators played another section.

Before Claire entered the suite, Evelyn spoke with Dr. Vale through her phone.

“If she signs while sedated, will the amendment hold?”

Vale answered, “Not if anyone proves the dose.”

Evelyn said, “Then make sure no one tests for it.”

The room became silent.

Evelyn looked toward the observation window.

“Your father drove me to this.”

Arthur had spent his final year blocking the Westbridge merger, auditing the foundation and restricting Evelyn’s access to family medical records.

She interpreted each safeguard as betrayal.

Gabriel asked whether she had drugged Claire before.

Evelyn refused to answer.

The toxicology team reviewed samples from Claire’s earlier hospital visits.

Stored blood revealed the same medication twice.
