Chapter 10 - King Edmund’s Final Statement
The magistrate opened King Edmund’s statement before the assembled guests and cameras.
The paper carried the late king’s seal, signature and the countersignature of the royal physician who attended him after his stroke.
Gabriel read aloud.
King Edmund described discovering irregular withdrawals from the Royal Children’s Hospital Fund. He named Minister Vane, Adelaide’s brother and Adelaide herself as participants in the concealment.
He also described Sofia Marlowe’s courage.
Sofia had interrupted the private meeting after hearing that a pediatric wing would close because the missing money was being blamed on administrative errors. She threatened to report what she heard.
Adelaide created the theft accusation within minutes.
King Edmund wrote that Sofia did not steal the White Rose Brooch. He ordered her reinstatement, compensated and placed under royal protection.
The order was never carried out.
The statement ended with a personal sentence:
If this document is read after my death, then those I trusted failed both Sofia Marlowe and the Crown. Her name must be restored publicly, not as an act of mercy, but as an act of fact.
Elena covered her mouth.
For years, she had imagined what it would feel like to hear an institution admit her mother was innocent. The reality was not triumph. It was grief for the woman who had not lived long enough to hear it.
Julian held her as her knees weakened.
Across the aisle, Adelaide remained motionless.
The magistrate asked whether she wished to respond.
She said King Edmund had been ill and confused. She accused Gabriel of manipulating his signature and Elena of staging the entire scene to secure royal status.
Then Elena opened Sofia’s silver thimble.
She removed the missing ledger page and handed it to the magistrate.
Adelaide’s signature appeared beneath the transfer orders.
The Queen stared at the tiny silver object.
She remembered Sofia wearing it.
“So that is where she hid it,” she whispered.
Every microphone in the conservatory captured the words.
The confession was small, almost accidental.
But it confirmed that Adelaide knew the page existed and knew Sofia had possessed evidence.
