The House of Open Records

Chapter 18 - The House of Open Records

The palace east archive reopened two years later as the House of Open Records.

Mara became its first independent director. Every financial document, staff disciplinary action and royal expenditure older than the legal privacy period was cataloged for public access.

The portrait of Saint Orla remained on the wall.

Behind it, the empty recess was preserved with a plaque explaining how records had once been hidden there. The display did not celebrate secrecy. It taught visitors what secrecy permitted.

A permanent exhibition told Sofia’s story through her own possessions: the thimble, employment badge, gown sketches and letters written after her dismissal. Elena insisted that the exhibition include Sofia’s anger, mistakes and fear rather than transforming her into a flawless martyr.

“She was a person before she became evidence,” Elena said.

The children’s health trust recovered enough money to reopen two regional treatment centers. Each facility included family lodging so parents would not sleep in hospital corridors.

Julian became king after the constitutional reforms took effect. His coronation was smaller than tradition required. Parliament controlled royal finances, and the palace published annual independent audits.

Elena accepted the title of Queen Consort but retained her teaching position part-time. She refused a separate household budget and converted the proposed office into rehearsal rooms for student musicians.

Critics still accused her of changing the monarchy too quickly. Others accused her of preserving it at all.

She answered both sides the same way.

“Institutions do not deserve survival merely because they are old. They deserve survival only while they remain useful to the people living now.”

Gabriel attended the archive opening in a wheelchair.

He stopped before Sofia’s photograph and apologized again for waiting so long.

Elena placed a hand on his shoulder.

“You carried what you could until someone was ready to open it.”

Outside, schoolchildren lined up beneath the palace windows.

They entered through the main doors.

No employee entrance separated them from history.
