Chapter 11 - The Crown Without a Mother
The attorney general opened a formal investigation before sunset.
Adelaide was not arrested immediately. As Queen Mother, she possessed ceremonial protections that had never been tested against allegations of fraud and obstruction. But her apartments were sealed, her communications restricted and her staff questioned.
Julian convened the Privy Council in the palace library.
Several senior officials urged delay. They feared markets, diplomatic relations and public confidence would suffer if the royal household appeared divided.
Julian asked whether public confidence was better served by hiding theft from children’s hospitals.
No one answered.
The council suspended Adelaide from all public duties and removed her access to royal funds. Harcourt was arrested for evidence destruction and conspiracy. Minister Vane, who had lived abroad for fifteen years, was detained at an airport while attempting to board a private flight.
Julian faced another decision.
The wedding license remained valid for only that day because Adelaide had moved the ceremony. Some advisers suggested Elena and Julian complete the vows privately before the scandal worsened. Others argued the marriage should be postponed until Sofia’s case no longer influenced public opinion.
Elena chose neither option.
“I will not marry you tonight to prove your mother failed,” she said. “And I will not delay because people think her crime makes me unworthy.”
She wanted time for the truth to stand separately from the wedding.
Julian agreed.
The decision cost them politically. Commentators called the relationship unstable. Tabloids claimed Elena was bargaining for additional titles. Adelaide’s allies suggested the public confrontation had been planned from the beginning.
Elena returned to her apartment rather than remain in the palace.
Before she left, Julian gave her the wedding ring Adelaide had tried to remove.
“It was never the Crown’s,” he said. “I bought it with my military salary.”
Elena turned it in her fingers.
“Your mother said everything you gave me belonged to the institution.”
“My mother was wrong about many things.”
Elena placed the ring back on her hand.
“This is still a promise,” she said. “But the promise must survive daylight.”
Julian watched her walk through the palace gates without guards or a title.
