Chapter 15 - The Price of the Red Uniform
The constitutional court ruled that Adelaide’s ceremonial immunity did not protect conduct committed before or outside official royal duties.
She was charged with conspiracy, fraud, obstruction of justice and evidence tampering. Minister Vane accepted a plea agreement and testified that Adelaide personally designed the plan to frame Sofia.
The scandal triggered demands for wider reform.
Some lawmakers wanted the monarchy abolished. Others proposed reducing royal authority and placing palace finances under public audit.
Julian supported the reforms.
His advisers warned that doing so might end the succession as he knew it. Under the proposed rules, the Crown Prince would become a largely ceremonial head of state with strict financial oversight. Several estates would transfer into public trust.
Julian signed his support anyway.
At a press conference, he wore the red ceremonial uniform from the interrupted wedding. Reporters asked whether the uniform now reminded him of humiliation.
“It reminds me that symbols are valuable only when the conduct beneath them is worthy,” he said.
He announced that the private royal hospital fund would be dissolved and replaced with an independently governed national children’s health trust. Assets connected to the diverted money would be sold to compensate affected families.
Elena did not stand beside him.
She watched from her classroom, where students had finally returned.
That separation mattered. She refused to become a decorative symbol of his reform, just as she had refused to become Adelaide’s obedient bride.
After the announcement, Julian visited the school alone.
He found Elena repairing a music stand.
“Did I do enough?” he asked.
“You did what was yours to do.”
“And us?”
Elena set down the screwdriver.
She loved him. But love had become entangled with public duty, dead parents and constitutional change. She needed to know whether Julian wanted a marriage or a partner who would validate his rebellion against Adelaide.
Julian removed the red jacket and folded it over a chair.
Then he helped her repair the remaining stands until sunset.
They spoke about ordinary things: where they might live, whether Elena would continue teaching, how they would argue without turning silence into punishment.
