The Missing Vow

Chapter 07 - The Missing Vow
The ceremony began beneath a ceiling filled with afternoon light.
Elena walked alone.
Sofia should have been beside her. The absence felt physical, like an empty hand at her elbow. Yet with every step, the silver thimble tapped softly against the bouquet handle.
Julian saw the marks on Elena’s wrist before she reached him.
He asked what happened.
Adelaide answered from the front row. “The bride became unsteady while dressing.”
Elena and Julian exchanged a look. They had agreed that if either of them believed the evidence was in danger, they would stop the ceremony before the legal vows.
The officiant began.
When he asked whether any lawful impediment existed, no one spoke. Adelaide appeared almost disappointed.
Then the conservatory doors opened.
Lord Harcourt entered with two guards loyal to him. He carried the black archive case.
Adelaide rose and announced that the ceremony could not continue because new evidence proved Elena’s family had attempted to blackmail the Crown.
Gasps moved through the room.
Harcourt opened the case and displayed forged letters supposedly written by Sofia. They demanded money in exchange for silence about the hospital accounts. Adelaide said Elena had repeated her mother’s scheme by approaching Gabriel and stealing documents from the palace.
Reporters lifted cameras.
Elena’s students, seated near the back, stared at her in confusion.
Julian stepped forward. Adelaide ordered him to remain at the altar.
“This is a matter of national security.”
“It is my wedding.”
“It is the Crown’s wedding.”
Julian removed the ceremonial sash from his shoulder and placed it on the altar rail.
“No,” he said. “Not anymore.”
Before he could reach Elena, Commander Marcus received an urgent message from the military chapel. Someone had triggered a fire alarm and attempted to enter the room containing the original ledger.
Julian made a rapid decision. He told Marcus to secure the evidence and promised Elena he would return within minutes.
Adelaide watched him leave.
The instant the doors closed behind him, she turned toward the crowd.
“Now,” she said, “we will hear the truth about the woman my son intended to marry.”

The wedding became a public interrogation.
And the only person standing beside Elena was the woman who had destroyed her mother.
