The Wedding Without a Throne

Chapter 17 - The Wedding Without a Throne

Elena and Julian married one year after the interrupted ceremony.

They did not return to the glass conservatory.

Instead, they chose the courtyard of Sofia’s old school, now rebuilt as a community arts center. Students decorated the walls with paper white roses. Former palace workers sat beside hospital families and monastery brothers.

There were no thrones.

Julian wore a dark blue suit rather than military uniform. Elena wore the same satin gown, repaired where Adelaide’s grip had loosened a seam at the wrist.

Sofia’s silver thimble was sewn inside the cuff.

Gabriel walked Elena down the aisle. He apologized that age forced him to use a cane.

“My mother would have liked that you came slowly,” Elena said. “She never trusted people who rushed important work.”

The ceremony was broadcast, but no press stood inside the courtyard. Cameras operated from a fixed platform so guests could remain guests rather than scenery.

Before exchanging vows, Julian and Elena read a joint promise.

They would maintain separate professional identities. Elena would continue teaching and would accept no title that required silence. Julian would never use royal security, money or protocol to control her choices. Disagreements involving public duty would be documented and reviewed by independent advisers.

Some commentators called the vows unromantic.

Elena found them deeply romantic.

They were promises made by two people who understood that love without boundaries could become another form of power.

When Julian placed the ring on her finger, no one claimed it belonged to the Crown.

Afterward, the children’s orchestra played a piece Sofia used to hum while sewing. Elena cried openly.

Julian did not try to shield her face from the cameras or turn the tears into a performance. He simply held her hand.

At sunset, they walked beneath an arch made from empty embroidery hoops and white fabric.

The crowd threw no rice or jewels.

They threw small paper roses.

One landed in Elena’s hair.

For the first time, a royal wedding ended without anyone being asked to disappear.
