A Trial in White Satin

Chapter 08 - A Trial in White Satin

Adelaide approached Elena beneath the glass ceiling.

She spoke with the sorrowful authority of a mother protecting her son. She said she had tried to welcome Elena despite Sofia’s crimes. She claimed Elena repaid that kindness by manipulating Julian and stealing confidential records.

The forged letters passed through the front row.

Each carried Sofia’s signature.

Elena recognized the handwriting as a careful imitation made from old employment files. One detail exposed it: Sofia always crossed the final letter of her surname with a rising stroke. The letters used a downward line.

Elena asked to examine the paper.

Adelaide refused.

“You have handled enough palace property.”

She took Elena by the wrist—the same wrist already marked in the dressing room—and pulled the wedding ring toward the light.

“This ring belongs to the Crown. You obtained it through deception.”

Elena’s face tightened with pain.

Guests watched. Some looked horrified; others seemed unable to turn away.

Adelaide tried to slide the ring from her finger.

Elena closed her hand.

“My mother was innocent.”

“Your mother was a thief.”

“She witnessed you stealing from sick children.”

The words struck the conservatory like shattered glass.

Adelaide slapped Elena’s hand away from the ring and demanded security remove her. But Harcourt’s guards hesitated. The accusation was now too specific to dismiss as emotional.

Elena raised her voice.

“The original ledger exists. King Edmund investigated the transfers. Sofia was framed with a replica brooch because she heard Adelaide and Minister Vane planning to hide the money.”

Adelaide laughed.

“Where is this miraculous ledger?”

Before Elena could answer, Harcourt announced that no document had been found in the military chapel. He claimed Elena’s story had collapsed.

For the first time, fear crossed Elena’s face.

If the ledger was gone, the final page inside the thimble proved little by itself. Adelaide could call it stolen or forged.

The Queen leaned close.

“Kneel,” she whispered. “Apologize, and I may allow you to leave through a side door.”

Elena’s eyes filled with tears, but she remained upright.

“I will not kneel for the person who forced my mother to spend her life begging to be believed.”

The great doors opened again.

Boots struck the marble in measured rhythm.

Commander Marcus entered with six royal guards.

Behind them walked Julian, still wearing the red uniform but no ceremonial sash.

In his gloved hands lay the White Rose Brooch.

The real one.
