Julian had been trained since childhood to prevent scandals, not expose them.
His tutors taught him that monarchy survived through restraint, continuity and the careful separation of private failure from public duty. His mother used those principles like locks.
Whenever Julian questioned her decisions, Adelaide reminded him that institutions were larger than individuals. Whenever he asked about Sofia Marlowe, she called the case unfortunate but settled. Whenever he defended Elena, she accused him of risking the crown for emotion.
Julian began to understand that “protecting the institution” often meant protecting the person who controlled its records.
He entered the east archive at dawn with Mara Finch, a young royal librarian whose father had lost his job after challenging Adelaide’s expenses. Mara knew the building’s forgotten staircases and blind spots.
The portrait of Saint Orla hung at the end of a corridor behind stacked conservation crates.
When Julian removed it, he found an empty recess.
Someone had arrived first.
Fresh scratches marked the frame. Dust had been disturbed on the floor. A small thread of cream silk clung to a nail.
Adelaide’s ceremonial dresses were lined with the same fabric.
Mara searched the catalog and discovered that one archive box had been checked out under Lord Harcourt’s authorization twenty minutes earlier. The record identified it only as “household correspondence, 1997.”
Julian confronted Harcourt in the security office.
Harcourt denied knowing anything about the portrait. When Julian asked to inspect the box, Harcourt said it had been transferred to the Queen’s private apartments for review.
“Then retrieve it.”
“I take instructions from Her Majesty.”
“You take instructions from the Crown.”
“Your mother is the Crown until the succession ceremony is complete.”
The answer revealed more than Harcourt intended. Adelaide believed Julian’s authority remained conditional. She intended to keep it that way.
Julian suspended Harcourt on the spot and appointed Commander Marcus Hale as acting security director. Marcus had served with Julian during military training and possessed the rare courage to say when the prince was wrong.
Together, they reviewed palace camera records.
The archive footage from that morning had been deleted.
But an exterior camera showed Harcourt carrying a narrow black case through the garden corridor. He entered Adelaide’s private wing and left without it.
Julian ordered Marcus to secure every palace exit.
Then a message arrived from Elena.
The Queen had moved the wedding ceremony forward by twenty-four hours.
No explanation was given.
Julian understood the strategy.
