The Phone Beneath the Perfect Pool

Chapter 01 - The Phone Beneath the Perfect Pool

Victoria Lane had spent eleven months arranging the perfect poolside wedding.

The roses matched the marble. The string quartet played beneath white arches. Three hundred guests stood around the turquoise water holding champagne while cameras followed every movement of the bride in her hand-beaded gown.

At her throat rested the Blue Astra, a pear-shaped sapphire surrounded by diamonds. Her new husband, Mason Carrington, had fastened it around her neck before the ceremony and whispered that no woman in the state had ever worn anything more valuable.

Victoria believed him.

She believed the necklace, the estate, and the Carrington name had finally made her untouchable.

Then Alexandra Carrington entered wearing black.

Mason’s mother had not been invited. Society pages called her retired, unstable, and estranged from the family company. Mason told Victoria that Alexandra had spent years trying to sabotage him because she could not accept that the board preferred her son.

Alexandra walked directly to the bride and held up a black phone.

“The wedding license has not been filed,” she said. “Tell Mason to stop the asset transfer before midnight.”

Victoria smiled for the guests filming around them.

“You came to my wedding with another threat?”

“I came with the transfer records.”

On the phone screen was a live video call. Twelve faces watched from separate offices—the trustees of Carrington Holdings.

Victoria saw Mason moving through the crowd behind Alexandra.

His expression changed when he noticed the screen.

“Give me that,” Victoria said.

Alexandra pulled the phone back.

“The Azure Coast resort, this estate, and the pension reserve are protected trust assets. Mason cannot sell them through your new company.”

The phrase your new company drew attention.

Victoria had signed incorporation papers two weeks earlier. Mason said they created a bridal lifestyle brand.

She did not know the company had submitted a four-hundred-million-dollar purchase offer for the resort surrounding them.

Guests began whispering.

Victoria grabbed the phone.

Alexandra caught her wrist.

“Do not destroy evidence.”

The warning sounded like a challenge.

Victoria turned toward the pool and threw the phone as hard as she could.

It struck the water with a large splash and disappeared beneath the blue surface.

For one stunned second, no one spoke.

Then Victoria laughed.

She placed both hands on her waist and looked toward the guests as if she had just completed a planned performance.

Alexandra did not look at the pool.

She looked at the sapphire around Victoria’s neck.

“The phone is waterproof,” she said. “And the livestream never stopped.”

Victoria’s laughter ended.

Alexandra stepped closer.

“That necklace was never Mason’s to give you. The setting contains the founder’s key.”

Mason reached them at last.

“Mother, enough.”

Alexandra faced her son.

“No. She just broadcast your fraud to every trustee.”

The Blue Astra suddenly felt heavy against Victoria’s skin.

Alexandra lifted one finger toward it.

“And when that key opens the archive, your bride will learn the estate beneath her wedding was purchased with money stolen from seventeen thousand employees.”

Around the pool, cameras remained raised.
