Chapter 01 - The Bride the Palace Never Wanted
Sophie Bennett had grown up six blocks from the royal hospital, in an apartment above her father’s small bookshop.
She first met Crown Prince Adrian Ward there, not at a gala or diplomatic reception, but during a winter blackout. Adrian had entered without security, wearing an old coat and looking for a biography of King Rowan, the reformer who had surrendered half the Crown’s private land to public schools.
Sophie recognized him immediately and pretended she did not.
When he asked whether the biography was accurate, she told him history written for kings was usually too polite.
He returned the next week.
Their courtship remained private for nearly a year. Adrian liked that Sophie disagreed with him without apology. She liked that he asked questions before offering solutions. Neither of them expected the relationship to survive the palace.
Queen Mother Helena called Sophie intelligent but unsuitable. Royal advisers called her politically dangerous because she had worked as a legal advocate for hospital employees. Tabloids called her a social climber before they had photographed her face clearly.
Adrian proposed anyway.
The wedding was scheduled for the same week he planned to present the Crown Renewal Act—a package that would expose royal finances, remove hereditary control from hospital boards and transfer several palace estates into public trust.
The reform threatened powerful people.
No one had more to lose than Adrian’s older half-brother, Marcus Ward.
Marcus had been born before their father married Helena. He could never inherit the throne under the old rules, but he controlled the royal household, security budget and private investment office. For twenty years, every expensive secret passed through his hands.
Adrian’s reform would force audits.
It would also reveal that Marcus had borrowed against royal charities and used hospital contracts to hide the debt.
Three nights before the wedding, Sophie found Adrian alone in the palace chapel burning copies of a speech.
He told her the council had warned him to postpone the reform. Marcus claimed the monarchy could not survive financial disclosure.
“What did you tell him?” Sophie asked.
“That a monarchy unable to survive the truth should not survive.”
Adrian handed Sophie a sealed brass key.
If anything happened to him before the act was presented, she was to open a box beneath King Rowan’s statue in the old parliamentary library.
“What is inside?”
“Enough to prove why someone might want me silent.”
Sophie tried to return the key.
“I am marrying you, Adrian. I am not agreeing to become your emergency witness.”
He closed her fingers around it.
“I know. That is why you are the only person I trust with it.”
On their wedding morning, Sophie fastened the key inside the lining of her dress.
