Helena had protected Marcus since childhood.
He was born during King Philip’s first marriage and grew up feeling displaced after Adrian’s birth. Helena pitied him. She persuaded the palace to grant him offices, security authority and access usually reserved for direct heirs.
When Marcus misused funds as a young man, Helena quietly repaid them.
When staff complained about intimidation, she transferred the staff.
Every rescue taught Marcus that the family would absorb the consequences of his decisions.
After seeing Emily Ross in the hospital, Helena opened the sealed family archive.
She found letters from King Philip warning that Marcus had forged his signature on investment orders. Philip planned to remove him from royal finance, but died before completing the change.
Helena had known about one forged order.
She had not known there were seventeen.
She also found the original report about Sophie’s father. He had not stolen records for profit. He had given them to regulators after royal administrators concealed preventable infant deaths. Helena’s office approved the statement calling him disloyal.
The discovery broke something in her.
For decades, she had confused the family’s version of events with history itself.
Helena brought the archive files to Ortiz.
She publicly corrected the record about Sophie’s father and admitted her office had protected Marcus from earlier investigations.
Reporters asked whether she believed Marcus poisoned Adrian.
Helena answered, “I believe my protection helped him believe he could.”
The statement did not absolve her.
It mattered because it ended the palace’s unified defense.
Marcus’s allies began resigning. Financial officers delivered records. A former guard described transporting chemical materials from the royal greenhouse to Owen’s residence.
The greenhouse manager remembered Marcus asking how quickly foxglove plants could be replaced after pruning.
The evidence moved closer.
Helena visited Adrian afterward.
She apologized for doubting Sophie and supporting the incapacity vote.
Adrian did not forgive her immediately.
“You protected the Crown from embarrassment,” he said. “You did not protect the people inside it.”
