Chapter 18 - The Child Who Asked About the Tiara
Years later, Adrian and Sophie brought their daughter Clara to the public museum.
She was six and fascinated by the diamond tiara displayed beside Sophie’s hospital gown.
Clara asked why her mother wore a crown to a hospital.
Sophie sat beside her.
She explained that she had been dressed for a wedding when Adrian became very sick. She stayed beside him because he was frightened and she loved him.
“Did the crown help?”
“No.”
“Then why keep it?”
“To remember that looking powerful and being safe are different things.”
Clara pointed toward the silver cup in the next case.
“Is that the bad cup?”
“It is the cup someone used to make a bad choice.”
Adrian joined them.
Clara knew Uncle Marcus existed but had not yet learned every detail. Sophie and Adrian gave her truth in layers, refusing to turn family history into either mythology or secret shame.
She asked whether Adrian was scared when he woke.
“Yes,” he said.
“Did Mama save you?”
“She helped. Doctors, nurses, police, Emily and many others helped.”
Sophie appreciated the answer.
Hero stories often erased the systems and ordinary people that made survival possible. Their daughter would not learn that crowns solved danger.
Before leaving, Clara pressed her hand against the glass near the hospital gown.
“I like your wedding dress better.”
Sophie smiled.
