The First Word After Darkness

Chapter 03 - The First Word After Darkness

At first, Adrian appeared to be looking through everyone.

His eyes moved slowly from the ceiling to Sophie’s face. Relief crossed them for one fragile second.

Then he saw Marcus near the doorway.

The heart monitor accelerated.

Marcus approached the bed with an expression of practiced concern.

“Brother, you are safe.”

Adrian tried to speak, but only air escaped.

Sophie leaned closer.

His fingers tightened around hers so sharply that the wedding ring pressed into her skin.

“Do not force him,” Dr. Elias warned.

Adrian’s gaze remained fixed on Marcus.

His lips moved again.

This time, Sophie heard one word.

“Cup.”

Marcus bent closer. “What about the cup?”

Adrian’s eyes widened.

He forced out another sound.

“Marcus.”

The monitor alarmed.

Marcus stepped backward immediately.

Queen Helena entered with two security officers and demanded everyone leave while doctors stabilized the prince. Sophie refused to release Adrian’s hand until Elias assured her his heart rhythm had recovered.

In the corridor, Marcus announced that delirium was common after cardiac collapse. He suggested Adrian had merely recognized his brother, not accused him.

Sophie said nothing.

She had felt the warning in Adrian’s grip.

Elias ordered a full toxicology panel and requested the silver ceremonial cup. Palace security claimed the cathedral had already transferred it to the royal household.

Marcus said it was being protected as evidence.

Elias asked which independent authority controlled the chain of custody.

No one answered.

The first blood results revealed a dangerous cardiac toxin related to foxglove. It could cause sudden arrhythmia, confusion and death while resembling an inherited heart condition.

The palace gardens contained several varieties of foxglove.

So did the royal hospital pharmacy, where related medication was stored under strict control.

Adrian had no prescription for it.

Sophie remembered the brass key sewn into her gown.

Marcus knew Adrian intended to expose the royal accounts. If the poisoning succeeded, Marcus could persuade the council to delay succession and assume emergency control.

But Adrian was alive.

That made the hospital room the most dangerous place in the kingdom.

Elias moved Adrian to a private monitored suite and ordered that no medication enter without two signatures. Sophie asked for independent security.

Marcus refused.

“The Royal Guard protects this family.”

Sophie looked through the glass at Adrian’s motionless body.

“The person who poisoned him passed through royal security.”

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“You are forgetting your position.”

May you like

Sophie touched the hidden key beneath her dress.

“No,” she said. “I am beginning to understand it.”
