She carried a silver pitcher of water onto the stage.
For a moment, Adrian froze.
Emily noticed.
She placed the pitcher down and stepped back, allowing a nurse to pour. Adrian accepted the glass, checked it instinctively and drank.
The audience applauded the new center, unaware of the private difficulty inside the gesture.
Afterward, Adrian apologized for hesitating.
Emily shook her head.
“You survived a poisoned cup. You are allowed to look twice.”
She had spent years blaming herself for carrying the ceremonial cup. Hearing him speak without accusation loosened something she still carried.
Sophie asked Emily to serve on the hospital ethics council. She accepted only after confirming the position involved real authority rather than symbolic gratitude.
The council’s first major decision protected a junior pharmacist who reported falsified records involving a government minister.
