The Cup Beneath the White Roses

Chapter 02 - The Cup Beneath the White Roses
The royal wedding took place beneath an arch of white roses in Saint Aurelia’s Cathedral.
More than a thousand guests watched as Sophie walked toward Adrian in a lace gown and diamond tiara borrowed from the Crown collection. Outside, thousands crowded the capital square.
The ceremony proceeded without incident until the unity toast.
By tradition, the bride and groom drank from a silver cup filled with water from the River Alder. The gesture symbolized two lives joining the kingdom’s history.
A palace attendant carried the cup to the altar.
Adrian drank first.
Sophie raised it next, but before the rim touched her lips, Adrian’s hand closed around her wrist.
His face had changed.
The color drained from his skin. His breath caught. The cup fell, striking the cathedral floor and spilling clear liquid across the white stone.
Adrian collapsed.
For several seconds, the entire cathedral froze.
Sophie dropped beside him. She called his name and tried to keep his head from striking the floor. Adrian’s eyes remained open but unfocused. His heart raced beneath her palm, then slowed so abruptly she thought it had stopped.
Royal physicians rushed forward.
Marcus reached them first.
He pulled Sophie away and shouted that she had handed Adrian the cup.
Cameras captured the moment without context: the prince on the floor, the bride crying, Marcus pointing at her.
Security removed Sophie from the altar while paramedics treated Adrian.
The silver cup disappeared during the confusion.
By the time Sophie reached the royal hospital, Marcus had already issued a statement saying the Crown was investigating possible poisoning connected to “an unauthorized substance introduced during the bridal preparations.”
The wording placed suspicion exactly where he wanted it.
Sophie’s dressing room was sealed.
Her personal assistant was detained.
The cathedral attendant who carried the cup could not be found.
At the hospital, Queen Helena stood outside the intensive-care room and refused to let Sophie enter. She said the prince’s condition had worsened and the bride was now part of a criminal investigation.
Sophie showed the unfinished marriage certificate.
“The vows were not completed,” Helena said coldly. “Legally, you are nothing here.”
Dr. Elias Grant, Adrian’s attending physician, overheard.
He had served the royal family for thirty years, but he had also watched Sophie kneel beside Adrian and keep his airway clear before medical staff arrived.
“The patient asked for Ms. Bennett during transport,” Elias said.
Helena denied hearing it.
Elias opened the door anyway.
Sophie entered still wearing the gown and tiara.
Adrian lay beneath white sheets with oxygen beneath his nose, his face almost colorless.
She took his hand.
His wedding ring was already on his finger, placed there before the toast.
As Sophie whispered his name, his fingers tightened weakly around hers.
Then the room door opened behind her.

Marcus stepped inside.
Adrian’s eyes opened.
