Chapter 05 - The Box Beneath the King
Sophie could not leave the hospital without being followed.
She gave the brass key to Mara Finch, her former legal colleague and one of the few people in the capital who had never accepted royal employment.
Mara entered the old parliamentary library before dawn using a researcher’s pass. King Rowan’s statue stood in a closed gallery awaiting restoration.
Beneath its bronze base, she found a small keyhole hidden inside the carved motto:
The Crown Exists to Serve.
The brass key opened a steel compartment.
Inside lay a black ledger, a portable drive and Adrian’s signed declaration.
The ledger recorded unauthorized loans taken against the Royal Children’s Fund, palace lands and hospital endowments. Every transaction passed through companies controlled by Marcus.
The drive contained audio recordings.
In one, Marcus argued with Adrian about the Crown Renewal Act.
“You are surrendering what generations preserved,” Marcus said.
“I am exposing what you stole,” Adrian answered.
Another recording captured Owen asking how long a foxglove compound remained detectable after death.
Mara copied the files onto three encrypted drives before leaving the library.
She sent one to Detective Ortiz, one to a judge and one to a newspaper editor under delayed release.
Then the library alarm sounded.
Owen had arrived with royal security.
Mara locked herself inside the archive room and called Sophie. She described the documents while guards forced the outer door.
Ortiz dispatched officers, but palace security claimed emergency authority over the building.
Mara uploaded the final recording to a public evidence server seconds before Owen entered.
He took the ledger and original drive.
He did not realize the copies had already left.
When Ortiz’s officers arrived, they found Mara handcuffed and Owen accusing her of stealing Crown property.
The judge who received the copy issued a preservation order and ordered Mara’s release.
Owen refused.
That refusal ended the illusion that he was protecting royal protocol.
National police arrested him for obstruction and unlawful detention.
Inside his silver case, they found a dropper bottle containing traces of the same cardiac toxin found in Adrian’s blood.
Owen claimed Marcus had given it to him for evidence transport after the cathedral.
The bottle carried fingerprints from both men.
For the first time, the plot connected the royal household directly to the poison.

If Adrian were declared permanently incapacitated before he could testify, Marcus could still control the kingdom long enough to destroy the evidence.
