She declined interviews and began reviewing decisions made during her decades as queen. The process produced more victims than she expected.
Staff dismissed for reporting abuse.

Helena established a restitution fund using her private assets. She placed it under independent management so recipients did not need to meet her or offer forgiveness.
She wrote Sophie a long apology.
Sophie answered only after several months.
She accepted that Helena regretted her choices. She did not accept the idea that regret restored trust automatically.
Their relationship developed slowly.
Helena visited Adrian during rehabilitation without advisers. She learned to ask whether Sophie wanted advice before giving it. Sometimes Sophie said no.
The first time, Helena looked hurt.
Then she accepted the boundary.
At a public hearing, Helena testified about the palace’s use of medical privacy to conceal wrongdoing. Her testimony supported reforms extending beyond the royal family.
A reporter asked whether she blamed herself for Marcus’s crimes.
“I did not place poison in the cup,” she said. “I repeatedly removed the consequences that might have taught him not to.”
Sophie watched from the audience.
The answer mattered because it neither claimed innocence nor stole responsibility from Marcus.
Afterward, Helena handed Sophie the original wedding tiara.
Sophie refused ownership.
They agreed to place it in a public museum with the hospital gown Sophie wore beside Adrian’s bed.
