The Man Behind Paris Winter

Chapter 10 - The Man Behind Paris Winter

Dr. Lucien Moreau was no longer practicing medicine.

He lived alone in a coastal town in Maine, repairing antique clocks and refusing all visitors. Naomi found him through an old licensing record.

At first, he denied recognizing Claire’s photograph.

Then Lucy placed the sapphire ring on his workbench.

Moreau sat down.

He had been a young psychiatrist at the Paris clinic when Claire arrived after the apartment fire. She was injured, pregnant, and heavily sedated. Richard told the clinic she had caused the fire during a psychotic episode and posed a threat to her family.

Moreau believed him.

After Lucy’s birth, Richard ordered the baby recorded as stillborn. Mara, working under a temporary administrative contract, discovered the falsified record and took the child before she could be transferred.

Moreau later realized Claire’s symptoms were caused by medication, not mental illness.

He tried to release her.

Richard threatened to expose Moreau’s own illegal prescription practices and destroy his career. Moreau surrendered.

“For twelve years,” he said, “I told myself I had no choice.”

Henry looked around the room filled with clocks.

“You had twelve years of choices.”

Moreau lowered his eyes.

He explained Paris Winter was not a place but a protocol. When discovery threatened, patients were transferred through properties controlled by a medical trust. The final site was a decommissioned rehabilitation lodge near the Canadian border.

Moreau still possessed the access code.

Federal agents prepared a rescue.

Richard learned of the plan through a contact inside Ashford Security. He ordered Rusk to reach the lodge first and destroy every record connecting him to Claire.

Rusk asked what to do with the patient.

Richard did not answer directly.

“She cannot appear at the board hearing.”

The call was recorded by a second phone.

Rusk had begun protecting himself.

At the lodge, Claire sat beside a barred window while staff packed files into boxes. Years of medication had weakened her, but her mind had grown clearer since a sympathetic nurse reduced the dosage.

When Rusk entered, she recognized him from Paris.

“You were at the fire,” she said.

He stopped.

Claire moved closer to the alarm button hidden beneath her blanket.

“My daughter found my father, didn’t she?”

Rusk’s silence answered.

Claire pressed the button.

The building erupted into alarms just as federal vehicles reached the gate.
