Chapter 15 - The Trial of the Missing Heiress
Richard’s trial lasted fourteen weeks.
The prosecution built its case from financial records, clinic files, Daniel’s microfilm, Rusk’s testimony, and Claire’s medical history.
Richard’s defense argued that Rusk acted independently and manipulated company accounts. They described Claire as unstable and claimed her memories had been shaped by years of medication.
Claire took the witness stand.
She spoke slowly, refusing dramatic language.
She described waking in Paris with restraints on her wrists. She described being told her husband and baby were dead. She described the first time she saw Richard inside the clinic.
“He said my father believed I was gone,” she testified. “He said no one searches for a thief after the funeral.”
Richard stared at the table.
His lawyer asked whether Claire hated him.
“Yes.”
The courtroom shifted.
The lawyer smiled as though he had exposed bias.
Claire continued.
“But hatred is not how I know his voice, his watch, the clinic rooms, or the dates on the transfers. Hatred is a feeling. Evidence is what remains when feelings are challenged.”
Henry testified next.
He admitted signing the first Paris Winter payment. He admitted accepting forged evidence against Claire because it fit his pride. He admitted allowing Richard to control internal investigations.
Richard’s lawyer asked whether Henry was blaming his nephew to escape responsibility.
“No,” Henry said. “I am naming his crimes while accepting my failures. They are not the same thing.”
Lucy did not testify. Claire refused to let the prosecution place a child before cameras when adult documents already proved the case.
The jury convicted Richard of conspiracy, kidnapping, fraud, unlawful confinement, obstruction, and responsibility for Daniel’s death.
He received a sentence that would keep him in prison for the rest of Henry’s life and most of Lucy’s childhood.
When officers led him away, Richard looked at Henry.
“You still lose,” he said. “Claire will never forgive you.”
Henry answered quietly.
“Her forgiveness was never the prize.”
Outside, reporters asked Claire whether she would take control of the Ashford empire.
She looked toward Lucy waiting beside Naomi.

“I spent twelve years having every choice taken from me,” she said. “I will not make the next one at a courthouse microphone.”
Then she walked away.
