The Price of the Past

Chapter 14 - The Price of the Past

Naomi wanted federal agents to handle the exchange.

Rusk demanded Henry come alone.

Henry agreed to wear a transmitter, but he refused to carry real money. The suitcase held blank paper and a tracking device.

Pier 6 had been abandoned since a warehouse fire years earlier. Rain moved across the river in silver sheets.

Rusk appeared beneath a rusted crane.

He looked exhausted, his folded ear and pale face unmistakable beneath the dock lights.

“I kept Claire alive,” he said.

“You kept her imprisoned.”

“Richard wanted her dead after the fire. I convinced him a living patient was easier to control than a body connected to the wrong crime.”

Rusk spoke as though reducing murder to captivity deserved gratitude.

He held a drive containing the remaining Paris records.

Henry asked why he had helped Richard.

“Money at first. Then leverage. Men like your nephew become more generous when they know you can ruin them.”

“And men like you?”

“We become practical.”

Henry opened the suitcase.

Rusk saw the paper and raised a pistol, but agents were already moving into position.

Before they reached him, a second vehicle entered the pier.

Richard had arranged one final payment from a hidden account. Two former security contractors came to kill Rusk and recover the drive.

Gunfire struck metal overhead. Henry dropped behind a concrete barrier while agents returned fire. No one was hit, but one contractor crashed the vehicle into a loading gate.

Rusk tried to escape along the river walkway.

Naomi tackled him before he reached the boat.

The drive fell onto the wet pavement.

Lucy’s voice came through Henry’s memory: rich people leave when things become inconvenient.

He crawled from cover and reached the drive before rain carried it through a drainage gap.

The files contained Richard’s private ledger, payments to every corrupt official, and a recording of his first meeting with Rusk.

On it, Richard said the words prosecutors needed:

If Claire survives, my inheritance disappears.

Rusk accepted a plea agreement and testified.

He would spend years in prison, but not as many as Richard wanted.

Henry returned home after midnight.

Lucy was awake at the kitchen table.

“Did you leave?” she asked.

“For a few hours.”

“Did you come back?”

Henry placed the recovered drive beside her cocoa.

“Yes.”

May you like

She considered this.

Then, for the first time, she called him Grandfather.
