The independent hospital collected DNA from Henry and Lucy under camera supervision.

Samples were sealed, signed, and transported by two separate couriers. Henry’s attorney, Rebecca Sloan, requested analysis from laboratories in New York and Virginia.

Richard publicly welcomed the testing.

Privately, he called a board member whose medical investment firm owned the Virginia laboratory’s parent company.

Thirty-six hours later, the first result arrived.

No biological relationship.

News alerts appeared within minutes.

Richard held a press conference before Henry received the official report. He announced that the child had been used in an attempt to extort the Ashford family. He promised to locate those responsible and provide Lucy with “appropriate social services.”

At the townhouse, Henry read the report in silence.

Lucy stood near the door, wearing clean clothes chosen by a housekeeper. The expensive dress made her look smaller, not safer.

“I told you,” she said.

“Told me what?”

“You would send me away when the paper said no.”

Henry looked again at the sapphire ring.

He remembered the crescent scratch. Claire caused it when she dropped the ring against a stone fountain during her birthday trip. No newspaper knew that detail.

The photograph from Mara’s apartment was also real. Henry recognized Claire’s childhood scar near her thumb.

Something was wrong with the test.

Rebecca Sloan noticed it first. The laboratory report listed Lucy’s sample time as 10:42 a.m.

Hospital video showed collection at 11:17.

The barcode number matched, but the time did not.

Naomi contacted the New York laboratory. Their sample had never arrived.

The courier van was found abandoned near a toll station.

Henry called the hospital and demanded an immediate recollection.

Before it could occur, child welfare officers arrived with an emergency order. The false test had been used to argue that Lucy had no verified guardian and was being exposed to media risk.

Richard’s legal team had filed the request.

Lucy backed into the wall.

Henry stood between her and the officers.

Rebecca warned him that resisting would make matters worse.

“I will go,” Lucy whispered. “Mara said sometimes you go quietly so people stop looking for what you hid.”

She removed the sapphire ring and pressed it into Henry’s palm.

Then she allowed the officers to lead her away.

Henry watched from the steps as the car disappeared.

Richard had taken the child, the board, and the narrative in a single day.
