Chapter 13 - The Evidence in the Ring
The sapphire ring contained more than memory.
During examination, a jeweler discovered the crescent scratch concealed a hinged section beneath the setting. Inside was a strip of microfilm no wider than a fingernail.
Daniel Mercer had placed it there before Paris.
The images showed original foundation ledgers, Richard’s shell companies, and photographs of meetings with clinic administrators. One frame captured Richard and Caleb Rusk entering the Paris apartment building hours before the fire.
Another showed containers of accelerant in a service van.
Daniel had intended to deliver the evidence to regulators. When he realized they were being followed, he hid the film in Claire’s ring, trusting that Henry would recognize it if anything happened.
The fire killed Daniel.
Investigators determined Claire and Mara escaped through a service stairwell before an explosion. Rusk captured Claire outside. Mara hid until she could reach the clinic, then rescued Lucy months later.
The two bodies used to identify Claire and Daniel belonged to unhoused victims from another district. Records had been altered through a corrupt official.
Mara spent twelve years moving Lucy from city to city while collecting evidence and searching for Claire.
Her final illness forced her to choose between continuing to hide and trusting Henry.
Henry visited Mara’s grave.
Only a temporary marker stood above the soil.
He brought white roses and the newspaper clipping she had used to teach Lucy his face.
“She trusted me after I had given her every reason not to,” he said.
Claire stood several feet away.
“She trusted Lucy’s need for family. That is different.”
Henry nodded.
They arranged a proper memorial funded personally, not through the foundation. Claire insisted Mara’s story be recorded without turning her suffering into public relations.
Rusk remained missing.
Investigators believed he possessed copies of Richard’s financial records and might attempt to trade them for immunity.
Richard, held without bail, refused to cooperate.
Then Henry received a package.
Inside was Thomas Ashford’s gold watch.
The back had been scratched with a message:
Bring ten million dollars to Pier 6 if you want the rest of Paris.
Rusk had taken the watch from Richard before the arrest.
