The Room Above the Bakery

Chapter 04 - The Room Above the Bakery

Before the DNA collection, Lucy led Henry and retired detective Naomi Cole to the building where she had lived with Mara.

The bakery below had closed three years earlier. Its faded sign read ROSE & RYE. The upstairs apartment smelled of dust, medicine, and old bread trapped in the walls.

Mara’s body had already been removed by city services. Neighbors said she used the name Mary Bell and avoided hospitals even when her breathing worsened.

Lucy’s mattress lay in the corner beside a stack of library books.

There were no toys except a wooden horse missing one wheel.

Henry walked through the room slowly. A billionaire’s granddaughter had slept beneath a leaking ceiling while he hosted galas promising no child would be forgotten.

Inside a kitchen cabinet, Naomi found prescription bottles issued under six different names. Mara had been changing identities for years.

They also discovered a wall map marked with circles around Baltimore, Philadelphia, Boston, and Montreal. Beside each city was a date and a small gray-car symbol.

“Every time the car came, we moved,” Lucy said.

“Did you ever see the driver?” Naomi asked.

“A man with a broken ear.”

Henry knew the description.

Caleb Rusk had worked for Ashford Security before becoming Richard’s personal protection chief. His left ear was permanently folded from a college wrestling injury.

Richard had told Henry that Rusk left the company five years ago.

In Mara’s bedroom, they found a metal cashbox. The key was gone, but Naomi opened it without damaging the lock.

Inside were newspaper clippings about Henry, annual photographs of the Ashford gala, and a hospital bracelet belonging to a newborn girl named LUCY MERCER.

The mother’s name had been cut away.

At the bottom lay a photograph of Claire holding a baby inside a small room. A handwritten date placed it five months after the Paris fire.

Claire had survived.

Henry sat on the edge of the bed.

For twelve years, he had mourned a daughter who lived long enough to give birth.

Lucy touched his sleeve.

“Is that my mother?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t she come with Mara?”

Henry had no answer.

Naomi found one more item inside the cashbox: a storage receipt renewed every six months. The unit was located across the city.

The most recent renewal had been paid in cash eleven days earlier.

Mara had been too sick to leave the apartment.

Someone else was still protecting Claire’s secret.
