The document carried Henry’s signature.
Twelve years earlier, while still numb from Claire’s reported death, Richard had brought him a stack of papers to settle “international security expenses.” Henry signed without reading every page.
One authorized a five-million-dollar transfer to Paris Winter Holdings.
The company funded the clinic where Claire was confined.
Rusk used that fact like a weapon.
“Richard will say you ordered it,” he told Henry. “The paper is cleaner than memory.”
Henry wanted to deny responsibility.
He could not.
Even if he had not known the purpose, his arrogance made the crime possible. He built a company in which subordinates learned that efficiency mattered more than questions. Richard merely used the culture Henry created.
Naomi kept Rusk talking until police sirens approached.
He fled through the loading dock, leaving the burned papers behind.
Investigators recovered partial tire prints and security footage showing a vehicle registered to an Ashford subsidiary.
Richard denied knowing Rusk’s location.
He also accelerated the board vote.
Using the false DNA report and Henry’s signature on Paris Winter payments, Richard argued that Henry might be implicated in Claire’s disappearance. To protect the company, the board suspended Henry as chairman pending investigation.
Richard became interim chief executive.
The decision was announced on Ashford Tower’s giant lobby screens.
Henry watched from the street.
For fifty years, the building had opened every door when he approached. Now his access card flashed red.
Rebecca asked what he wanted to do.
“Go to Vermont.”
“The court may accuse you of interfering with an investigation.”
“My daughter has waited twelve years for me to interfere.”
Lucy, meanwhile, was placed at a temporary foster home under Richard’s preferred agency. The foster parents were kind but uninformed. They had been told she was involved in a high-profile inheritance scam.
At night, Lucy searched local news on a borrowed tablet.
She saw Richard enter Ashford Tower as the new leader.
She saw Henry standing outside.
She did not know about the letter.
She believed the false test had ended everything.
Then a woman from the foster agency arrived to transfer her to another home.
Lucy recognized the driver waiting outside.
