Chapter 12 - The Boardroom Without Henry
Richard convened the emergency board hearing before news of Claire’s rescue became public.
He planned to make his interim authority permanent.
Board members gathered on the fiftieth floor of Ashford Tower. Richard presented charts showing stock losses, legal risks, and Henry’s signature on the Paris Winter transfer. He argued that Henry’s family crisis threatened thousands of jobs.
“Sentiment cannot govern an empire,” he said.
A director asked about the second DNA test.
Richard claimed no verified result existed.
Then the boardroom doors opened.
Rebecca Sloan entered with federal marshals, Naomi, and Claire.
The room went silent.
Claire walked with a cane, refusing the wheelchair. Lucy held her free hand. Henry followed several steps behind, not as chairman but as witness.
Richard recovered quickly.
“This woman’s identity has not been established.”
Claire looked at the gold watch on his wrist.
“When we were children, you dropped that watch into the lake and blamed the gardener. I found it beneath the dock. You made me promise not to tell Uncle Henry.”
Richard’s face changed.
Claire continued.
“You also told me, before Paris, that if I signed the transfer, my child could grow up safe. I had never announced the pregnancy.”
One director whispered, “My God.”
Rebecca distributed certified DNA results, French clinic records, and payment documents from Paris Winter.
Richard dismissed them as incomplete.
Then Naomi played Rusk’s recorded call.
Richard’s voice filled the room:
She cannot appear at the board hearing.
No one moved when the recording ended.
Richard stood.
“You have no proof I ordered violence.”
“No,” Claire said. “Only confinement, fraud, kidnapping, obstruction, and twelve years stolen from a child and her mother.”
Federal agents approached.
Richard backed toward the window.
He looked at Henry.
“You built all of this. I only learned how to protect it.”
The accusation landed because part of it was true.
Henry did not deny it.
“I taught you that winning could excuse cruelty,” he said. “Today I learn what that lesson cost.”
Richard was arrested in front of the board he intended to command.
The directors voted to restore Henry temporarily.
He declined.
Instead, he nominated Claire as acting chair pending an independent review.
Claire looked at him.
“I have been out of the world for twelve years.”
