CHAPTER 1: The Gym Went Silent

The entire gymnasium smelled like polished wood, rubber soles, and the sharp nervousness that always came before a school assembly turned ugly. Ethan Miller stood near the edge of the blue wrestling mat with both hands half-raised, not in anger, but in warning. He was thirteen, slim, pale from spending more time in libraries than locker rooms, wearing a gray hoodie and blue gym shorts that made him look even smaller under the bright ceiling lights.

Around him, students from Westbrook Middle crowded the bleachers and floor lines. Some whispered. Some laughed. Some lifted their phones, already hungry for a clip that would spread before lunch. Ethan could see one red phone in particular, held by a blonde girl named Hannah Price, whose face had gone white with fear. She was not smiling. She was recording because she knew no adult would believe what was about to happen unless there was proof.

Across from Ethan stood Blake Harlow, broad-shouldered, red hoodie stretched tight across his chest, his grin full of the kind of confidence that came from never being punished. Blake’s father owned half the new buildings in town. His mother chaired every committee. His last name opened doors, changed grades, and made teachers suddenly forget what they had seen.

“Come on, Miller,” Blake said, stepping closer. “Do something.”

Ethan swallowed. The noise in the gym blurred into a low roar. He heard his father’s voice in his memory, calm and strict: Never start it. Never enjoy it. But if you cannot leave, make it end safely.

“I don’t want to fight you,” Ethan said.

That made the crowd louder.

Blake’s grin vanished. He did not want refusal. He wanted fear. He wanted Ethan crying, stumbling, apologizing for existing in front of everyone. Blake shoved him once with both hands, hard enough that Ethan’s heels slid on the mat. Hannah gasped behind her red phone.

Ethan steadied himself.

The gym doors at the far wall were still closed.

No one had come to stop it.

And Blake Harlow had just decided to make sure everyone remembered this day.
